Players' Code of Conduct!
Basketball is intended to be a recreational activity for enjoyment and health. This code of conduct has been developed by Basketball Victoria to give participants some guide to the expectations it has on those participants. It is intended to assist everyone to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their involvement in basketball. As a result, the quality of participation will be improved so people are more likely to start and continue their involvement in basketball. Enjoy!
- Understand and play by the rules
- Respect referees and other officials
- Control your temper
- Work equally hard for yourself and for your team
- Be a good sport
- Treat ALL players, as you would like to be treated
- Play for the "enjoyment of it" and not just to please your parents and your coaches
- Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person
- Be prepared to lose sometimes
- Listen to the advice of your coach and try to apply it at practice and in games
- ALWAYS respect the use of facilities and equipment provided

- Remember basketball is for enjoyment
- Be reasonable in your demands
- 3.Teach understanding and respect for the rules
- 4.Give ALL players a reasonable amount of time on the court AND on the bench
- Develop team respect for ALL teams AND their coaches
- Instil in your players respect for officials and an acceptance for their judgement
- Guide your players in their interaction with the media, parents and spectators
- Group players according to age, height, skills and physical maturity, whenever possible
- Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability for the players in your team
- Be prepared to lose sometimes
- Act responsibly when players are ill or injured
- As well as imparting knowledge and skills, promote desirable personal and social behaviours
- Keep your knowledge current
- Ensure that ANY physical contact with a player is appropriate
- AVOID personal relationships with ANY of your players
- Respect ALL the rights, dignity and worth of EVERY person
- ALWAYS respect the use and facilities and equipment provided
Parents Code of Conduct!
- Encourage your children to participate if they are interested. If they are not interested in playing, DO NOT push them
- Focus on playing the game, reducing the emphasis on winning
- Teach your children that an honest effort is as important as a victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment
- Encourage children to always play by the rules
- DO NOT criticise children in front of others, but reserve constructive criticism for more private moments.
- Remember children are involved in sport for their enjoyment, NOT yours
- Remember a child learns best by example. Applaud good play by ALL teams
- Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability. DO NOT raise issues of disagreement publicly
- DO NOT criticise opposing team members or supporters by word or gesture
- Set a good example by your own conduct, behaviour and appearance
- Support ALL efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from ALL sporting activities
- Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender, race or impairment
Spectators Code of Conduct!
- Remember children play sport for fun. They are NOT playing for the entertainment of spectators. They are NOT miniature professionals
- Applaud good performances from each team. Congratulate ALL players regardless of the outcome
- Respect the referee's decision. If there is disagreement, follow the appropriate procedure in order to query the decision
- NEVER ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during the competition. Be positive
- Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches or players
- Show respect for your teams opponents. Without them there would be NO game
- Encourage players to obey the rules and decisions of officials
- Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by NOT using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials
- Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender, race or impairment
